In the article Family Exercise Ideas for Every Season by Esther Ellis, MS, RDN, LDN, and reviewed by Academy Staff RDNs, you’ll find great ideas for keeping the whole family active year-round. Each season offers unique opportunities to stay moving together, whether indoors or out.

We all know it can take a bit more creativity to incorporate activity into our day during the colder months. Personally, I’ve found that bundling up for a winter walk or taking the kids sledding can be both fun and a great workout. The article also suggests visiting a gym or playing games like basketball as a family. One of my favorite winter activities was hosting a “Winter Olympics” challenge with my kids, where we competed to see who could do the most sit-ups, push-ups, and jumping jacks. Not only was it a fun bonding experience, but it also left me sore (in a good way) the next day!

Staying active doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require some planning and consistency. I remember a spring walk with my son, who was about six at the time. Midway through, he asked, “Can’t we take a shortcut, Mom?” I replied, “No, if we take a shortcut this time, it’ll be easy to do it every time.” We finished the walk—without the shortcut—and he survived (ha!).

If you’re looking for ways to incorporate more movement into your day and make it a fun, sustainable part of your routine, we can work together during our sessions to create a plan tailored to your goals.
